Worboys, Ernest John

Ernest was born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire 28 March 1878, the second son of James and Charlotte (nee Huffer) Worboys.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Ernest enlisted in June 1948.  Nothing is known of his military history but the 1918 Absent Voters List shows him as being in the 433rd Agricultural Company of the Labour Corps, Regimental Number 506641.  Agricultural Companies were generally made up of men no longer fit for active service.  Ernest survived the War.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Before enlisting Ernest worked as a maltster’s labourer for one of the brewery companies in Ashwell.

Ernest married Emily Rose Reynolds on 24 December 1900 at Ashwell, Hertfordshire.  They had six children, all born in Ashwell, Dorothy Matilda born 30 October 1901, Mary Winifred born 23 April 1903, Ernest James born 16 October 1905, Frank Raymond born 3 June 1909, Phyllis Charlotte born 26 April 1915 and Cyril Rupert born 5 December 1920.

There are electoral roll entries for 1924-29 showing that Ernest and Rose lived in Dunton, Bedfordshire.

The 1939 census shows them living at Caldecote, Hertfordshire with Ernest a farm labourer.

Ernest died in the 2nd quarter 1948 in the Royston District, probably Caldecote.
