Westerman, Herbert George

Herbert was the eldest son of Herbert George and Nellie Sarah Jane (nee Westerman) Westerman born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 6 September 1896.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Herbert enlisted with the Northumberland Fusiliers on 30 October 1915.  He served with the 80th Territorial Force under Regimental numbers 7244, 7563 and 267046, and saw active service on the Western Front, France, where he received injuries from gunshots.  He survived the War and was discharged on 25 November 1918.

Herbert was awarded the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the Silver War Badge.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census records him as a bottle washer in a brewery in Ashwell.

The 1939 census shows him single and a farm worker, living at Ashwell with his mother.

It appears he never married as his will leaves his estate to his mother Nellie S J Westerman.

Herbert died in Ashwell on 8 September 1952.

His brother Ernest William saw active service on the Western Front and survived the War.
