Bonnett, Clifford Gilbert
Clifford was the second of four sons of Henry and Anna (nee Ebsworth) Bonnett born on 9 July 1894 in Ashwell. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.
Clifford enlisted on 10 November 1915. He served with the Army Medical Corps (6th Division) 16th Field Ambulance during the War, Regimental Number 82062. He saw active service on the Western Front in many of the Battles of the Somme. He survived the War.
Clifford was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour
The 1911 census shows him living in Ashwell, aged 16. His father Henry was a tailor in Ashwell.
He married Ellen Gladys Greenham in September 1920 at Harpenden, Hertfordshire and they had one son, Roy Clifford G born 1 September 1920. Roy is listed on the Prisoners of War Roll, Far East, British POWs in Thailand & Saigon in WWII.
The 1939 census shows them living at ‘Adelong’, Ashwell, a photographic emulsion mixer.
Clifford died in the Congleton district in May 1984 aged 89.
Clifford’s brother Harry also saw active service in WWI and survived.
