Clark, Leonard Arthur

Leonard was the fourth son of James and Elizabeth (nee Hagger) Clark, born at Bennington, Hertfordshire on 23 March 1899.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylor School in Ashwell.

Leonard enlisted on 10 June 1918.  He served with the Bedfordshire Regiment, Regimental Number 45344, and then with the amalgamated Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment, Regimental Number 52426.  Nothing else is known of his military history.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census shows Leonard as a farm labourer.  The 1921 census shows him living at Steeple Morden, Cambridgeshire with his parents.

Leonard married Beatrice E Seymour at Royston in 1st quarter 1923.  They had two children, Joan E born at Royston in 1925 and Leonard J born at St Albans in 1930.  The 1939 census shows them living at St Albans, Hertfordshire with Leonard a coach conductor.

Two of Leonard’s brothers, Reginald George and Walter Henry, also served in the War and both survived.

His father James became the policeman in Ashwell in August 1899 and retired in March 1904.
