Pettengell, Percy Edward

Percy was the younger son of George Edward William and Elizabeth (nee Jeeves) Pettengell, born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 2 October 1895.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylor School in Ashwell.

Percy enlisted at Hertford, Hertfordshire on 13 January 1916 with the 3/1st Hertfordshire Yeomanry, Regimental Number 2991.  On 6 June 1917 he was transferred to the Reserve Regiment, Cavalry, then to the 4th Dragoon Guards, Regimental Number 106133.  He was sent the Western Front on 6 April 1918 and saw active service at Beloeil, in the Mons region. He survived the War and was demobilised in April 1919.

 He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Percy married Clara Louise Rollins in the 3rd quarter 1916.  They had two children, Francis A born 1917 and Mavis H born 1922.  They lived in Stotfold, Bedfordshire.

Before enlisting he was a labourer on a farm.

The 1939 census shows them living at Stotfold with Percy a jobbing gardener.

Percy died on 10 September 1981.

Percy’s brother Fred also served in the War and survived.
