Law, Arthur

Arthur was the second son of James Law and Elizabeth Ann (nee Harradine) born at Newnham, Hertfordshire on 23 July 1892.  Arthur was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Arthur enlisted with the 1st (Duke of Edinburgh’s) Wiltshire Regiment, Regimental Number 26247, on 16 March 1916.   He saw active service on the Western Front, France and Flanders.  He transferred to the 5th Battalion and in 1917 whilst engaged in the Battle of Kut al Amara in the Mesopotamian Theatre of War Arthur was declared killed in action.  He was later found to be alive and survived the War, being discharged from service in 1920.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census shows him as a footman.

In August 1911 Arthur was severely burned rescuing his father from a haystack fire and removing James’s burning clothes.

Arthur married Annie Millicent Flower at Stourbridge, Worcestershire in 2nd quarter 1920, where their son James Ernest was born in 1921.  They then moved to Ashwell, Hertfordshire where their daughter Nora Millicent was born in 1922.  Their second daughter, Elizabeth Annie was born in 1928 but died aged 2.

The 1939 Census shows Arthur living in Back Street, Ashwell, Hertfordshire with his wife Annie M Law.  He is noted as incapacitated.  Arthur died in 1940.

Their son James Ernest served with the Royal Marines in WWII and was killed in action in 1944 aged 24.

Arthur’s brother Bruce was killed in action on the Western Front in 1918.
