Game, Benjamin

Benjamin was the younger son of George and Emma (nee Hicks) Game, born in Aspenden, near Buntingford, Hertfordshire in 13 April 1876.

Benjamin enlisted on 13 July 1916.  He served with (The Queen’s) Royal West Surrey Regiment, Regimental Number 17998, and saw active service on the Western Front, France and Flanders.  It appears he was injured because he transferred to the Labour Corps, Agricultural Company, Regimental Number 55930.  Agricultural companies were not so much recruited as formed from soldiers no longer fit enough for front line combat duties.  Benjamin survived the War.

Benjamin was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Before enlisting he was a farm labourer.

Benjamin married Rosa Lilly Dellar in Ashwell in the 2nd quarter 1906.  They had five children, Alec John born in 1906, Daisy Violet born in 1909, Benjamin James born 1911, Lilian Mary born 1913 and Edith Emma born 1920.

The 1939 census shows him living in Back Street, Ashwell and listed as incapacitated.

Benjamin died at Ashwell in March 1955.
