Wilderspin, George

George was born at Newnham, Hertfordshire 28 June 1892, the third son of Frank and Emily (nee Lucas) Wilderspin.  George was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

George enlisted on 16 June 1916 with the Bedfordshire Regiment, Regimental number 31771.   He did serve overseas but we do not know in which Theatre of War.  He was wounded and transferred to the Labour Corps (Eastern Centre Labour Corps, which was a training centre), Regimental Number 427050.  George was discharged as no longer fit for war service on 28 December 1917 and he returned to Ashwell, Hertfordshire.

George was awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the Silver War Badge.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Before enlisting he was a farm labourer.

George married Ruth Greensmith in the 3rd quarter 1914 at Ashwell, Hertfordshire.  The 1919 Electoral Roll shows them living at Cannon’s Cottages, Ashwell.  They had four children, all born at Ashwell, Joseph 2 October 1914, Constance 15 May 1916, Ivy 11 July 1920 and Ida 7 April 1926. Ruth died in September 1927.

George then married Agnes Dodson at Ashwell, Hertfordshire in 2nd quarter 1929.  They moved to St Neots, Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire where their son, Peter was born 2nd quarter 1932.

The 1939 census shows them living at St Neots, with George a general labourer.   George’s brother Herbert is living with them, a single man.

George died in June 1966 at Rushden, Northamptonshire.

George’s brother, Mark also served in the War and survived.
