Covington, Herbert

Herbert was born in Ashwell, Hertfordshire 1880 eldest son of George and Emily (nee Waldock) Covington of Ashwell. George died in 1906, well before Herbert went to war.  Herbert was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Herbert enlisted on 8 December 1915.  He served a Private with the King’s Own (Royal Lancashire) Regiment, 9th Battalion, Regimental Number 26534 in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders.  On 29 November 1917 he was sent to an ambulance train with suspected dysentery.  Later, after suffering severe injuries in battle Herbert was discharged as no longer fit to serve on 8 November 1918.   He returned to Ashwell where he died on 5 September 1920.

He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

Herbert is buried in the United Reformed Church yard, Ashwell, north-east corner, and commemorated the Ashwell Village War Memorial, and St Mary’s Church Honours Roll.

The 1911 census shows Herbert as a domestic gardener.
