Daniels, Lewis

Lewis was born in Southills, Bedfordshire in 1886, the only son of William and Annie (nee Robinson) Daniels.  Lewis was a pupil of the Merchant Taylors School, Ashwell.

Lewis Daniels served as a Private in the 9th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment, Regimental Number 39449 He fought in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders and was killed in action on 21 October 2018.

He is commemorated at The Highland Cemetery, Le Cateau, France, Memorial number VI.B.16. He is also commemorated on the Roll of Honour in St Mary’s Church Ashwell and on the Ashwell Village War Memorial.

Lewis was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

He married Phoebe Muncey of Wrestlingworth, Bedfordshire in 1907.  They had five children, William Lewis born 1908 in Hitchin, Elsie Ruby Irene 1912 in Hitchin married Frank Raymond Worboys; Winifred May 1914 in Ashwell married Jack Oyston; Ronald John born 1916 in Ashwell; Gladys Lillian born 1919 in Ashwell married Herbert Godfrey Ilett. All three daughters married Ashwell men.

At the time of enlisting in the army he lived in Station Rd, Ashwell. He was a cowman on a farm.
