Haylock, Frank Samuel

Frank was born in Ashwell on 24 June 1877, 7th son of Joseph and Emily (nee Austin) Haylock.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Frank enlisted on 16 August 1916 at the age of 39. Nothing is known of his military history but the Absent Voters list of 1918 shows him at the Labour Centre, Regimental Number 355069, Northern Command.  I presume this to be the Command Depots for the rehabilitative training of soldiers too fit for convalescent camp, but not yet fit enough to be returned to unit.  The Northern Command was in Ripon, Yorkshire.  Frank survived the War and returned to Ashwell.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Before enlisting Frank was the postman for Ashwell and Odsey.

He married Ellen Jane Fisher in 1899 and they had two daughters, Winifred Florence born in 1899 and Ethel Mary born in 1903.

The 1939 census shows Frank and Ellen living in Ashwell, with Frank a retired rural postman.

Frank died in 1963.
