Jack Sheldrick

John was born on 1 November 1891 at Ashwell, Hertfordshire, the sixth son of John and Martha (nee Scoot) Sheldrick.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

John enlisted at Hitchin on 17 June 1916.  He served with the South Wales Borderers 10th Battalion, Regimental Number 40406, in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Belgium.  He died of wounds on 19 August 1917.

 John was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

He is buried in Bard Cottage Cemetery, Ypres, Arrondissment Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium, and commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour and the Ashwell War Memorial.

Before enlisting in the army he was a farm labourer.

John’s brother Bertie died of wounds on 19 March 1915 at Neuve Chapelle, France.  His brothers Fred, Percy and Frank all served on the Westen Front and survived.
