Burton, Frank

Frank was born in Ashwell, Hertfordshire in 1898 the third son of John Worboys Burton and Margaret Jane (nee Humphreys) Burton.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Frank enlisted in March 1915. He served with the 5th Horse Transport Company of the Army Service Corps on the Western Front, France and Flanders.  He survived the War and was demobbed on 19 April 1919.

Frank was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census shows him, a butcher, living in Bedford with the Wykes family.

Frank married Annie Laura Chamberlain at Islington, London on 24 June 1917.  They had one son Francis John born 1917 at Meppershall, Shefford, Bedfordshire.  The 1939 census shows them living in Shefford, Bedfordshire with Frank a Butcher’s Manager and a Special Constable.

Frank died on 8 April 1965 at Brampton, Huntingdonshire.

Frank’s brothers, John, Harry and Percy Humphreys, saw active service in the War and all survived.
