Clark, Reginald George

Reginald was born in Widford, Hertfordshire on 21 August 1889, the 2nd son of James and Elizabeth (nee Haggar) Clark at Widford, Hertfordshire.  By 1901 they were living in Ashwell, Hertfordshire where Reginald was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School.

Reginald enlisted with the 1/1 Battalion of the Hertfordshire Regiment, Regimental Number 6104 on 3 January 1916. During the War he transferred to the 6th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, Regimental Number 36282.  He saw active service on the Western Front, France and Flanders and survived the War.

Reginald was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census shows Reginald in service as a footman at The Hoo, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, a large estate owned by John Lockhart Wood, who died of his wounds in the War.

The 1939 census shows him living at Lees Court, Swale District, Kent, a butler and single.

It is not known if Reginald married.  He died at Harpenden, Hertfordshire on 22 October 1972.

Two of Reginald’s brothers, Walter Henry and Leonard Arthur also fought in the War and both survived.

His father James became the policeman in Ashwell in August 1899 and retired in March 1904.
