Whitby, John Frederick

John was born in 3rd quarter 1882 at Ashwell, Hertfordshire, the sixth son of Sidney and Jane (nee Worboys) Whitby.  He was born at Slip End, Ashwell, Hertfordshire but moved to Middlesex in his early teens so it is possible he was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

John was a Private with the 8th Battalion of the City of London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), Regimental Number 51445.  He served in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders and was killed in action on 30 November 1917.

John was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

He is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, Departement du Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.

John married Annie Collins in the 3rd quarter of 1903 and they had at least two children, John Frederick and Arthur Thomas, both born in Finsbury Park, Middlesex.

His War records show his address as Wood Green, London.
