Anderson, Reginald Arthur

Reginald was the eldest son of Ellis and Annie (nee Kingsley) Anderson. Ellis was a bootmaker and beer retailer at the Australian Cow pub¹ in High Street Ashwell. Reginald was a pupil of the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Reginald enlisted on 16 May 1916 with the Royal Irish Regiment, Regimental Number 18732. He was mobilised to the Western Front, France and Flanders and during the War transferred to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, Regimental Number 43580, and again to the Leicester Regiment, Regimental Number 5852.

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He survived the War.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Reginald married Phyllis Mary Bloomfield in 1923 and they had two daughters, Olive M born 1925 and Esther P born 2nd quarter 1931.

Reginald was the manager of a boot shop in Baldock.

He died on 30 October 1930 at the Royal Free Hospital, South East St Pancras, Middlesex.

Reginald’s brother Percy also saw active service on the Western Front and survived.

1.  The Australian Cow, beerhouse, stood on the corner of High Street and Kingsland Way. It was owned by Messrs Fordham and occupied by Ellis Anderson.
