Bailey, Percy MM

Percy was the fourth son of Frederick John and Fanny Elizabeth (nee Hankin), born in Ashwell in 1888. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylor School in Ashwell.

Percy enlisted in September 1914 with the Royal Army Medical Corps. He saw active service with the 2nd London Division Field Ambulance, Regimental Number 512269, on the Western Front, France and Flanders and was awarded the Military Medal, a Level 3 Gallantry Medal, which is now held in the Ashwell Museum.  Percy was also awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Percy survived the War and returned to Ashwell.  It is not known when he died.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census shows him living with his sister, Fanny, and her husband Jack Allman in Bowes Park, North London.  He was a brewer’s clerk.

It is not known if Percy married or if he had children, nor when he died.

Percy’s father Frederick owned the building company in Ashwell and built the Ashwell village school and whose firm went on to do most of the building work in Ashwell.
