The Cricketers

The Cricketers and Lucas Lane. 1920

The Cricketers, now a private dwelling. 1991

The Cricketers in Lucas Lane was a beer house, built about 1908, that sold Pages beers. It was taken over by Wells and Winch of Biggleswade in 1921 and probably stayed open until the late 1950s or early 1960s.

  • Hello Dave, you are right on your pubs apart from The Angel which was the old name for the Swan last heard of in 1609 but I don’t suppose you were around then. A contenders for the seventh could have been the Chalkmans Knoll which closed in the early 50s.

  • I lived in Ashwell from 1946 till 1952.
    I believe The Cricketers was still operating as a pub at the time we left to emigrate to Australia.
    As I recall (subject to correction, of course) there were seven pubs during those times, namely;
    the Rose & Crown, the Bushell & Strike, the Three Tuns, The Engine, The Angel, the Fox and the Cricketers.
