The Chalkman’s Knoll was a Fordhams pub situated halfway between Bygrave and Ashwell, which was convenient for those walking between the two villages and for those working in the fields.It was built of claybat, existed prior to 1841 and closed about 1950. It has now been demolished to allow a new house to be built on the knoll.

The 1861 and 1871 England and Wales census show my great great grandfather, Abraham Batten Berry, was publican at The Chalkman’s Knoll, with his wife, Mary Maria Berry (nee Peters). I was saddened to learn that this building has now gone, but very grateful to see the photos. Thank you.
Sadly the building has now been completely pulled down ( Jan 2014) and a new large house built nearby. And yes Mr Rogers we are always interested in photographs of Ashwell and Ashwellians.
My Great Grand Father Mr Bullard was landlord of the Knoll. I have a few family photographs if you are interested.
