The Bushel And Strike Mill Street
In 1633 a wine tavern called the Wheatsheaf was kept by Valentine Lee in Mill Street. In 1854 the Wheatsheaf was owned by Fordhams, but kept by Thomas Warboys.It is thought that the Wheatsheaf was pulled down and that the Bushel and Strike was started as a small beer house in an adjoining house. It has now been fully licensed for over 60 years.Fordhams sold the pub to Green’s in 1952 and it was subsequently sold to Charles Wells in 1964.

After researching my family tree the 1861 census flags up my great uncle Charles Thomas Warboys aged 2 he lived in Back Street Ashwell. He was born 1859 , died 1939 I wonder if he was the landlord mentioned above? There two other Thomas’s one born 1798 and Thomas George born 1863. His father Joseph married Emma ? The 1871 census reveals her to be a widower living in Swan street with Thomas George and his Sister Mariah born 1857. I have a host of relatives (14) named Warboys all from Ashwell they start with William born 1747 to Elizabeth Mary Ann my maternal great grandmother born 1861. It would seem logical that I am related in some way to Thomas the landlord; I hope so because a love a pint of beer and good company. warm regards and cheers trevor Sugden
