A. Bryant, Bulls Head

Pint Measure from Bulls Head Inn , Ashwell
A Bryant Bulls Head Ashwell inscription on base

I recently bought an Imperial Pint measure at auction at Napier, New Zealand. Inscribed on its base is “A. Bryant, Bull’s Head, Ashwell, Herts.” It has ten verification stamps “VR 484” (Hertford County) and one “VR 66” (Stafford County) immediatley left of PINT. The maker is John Warne,  Blackfriars Rd, London. Peter Greener has confirmed that there was a public house by that name in Ashwell, however I cannot find a reference to a publican “A. Bryant”.  Can anyone provide more information? I will happily supply more detailed photos to anyone who is interested. I wonder how it found its way to New Zealand.

Thanks, Scott Thomsen.

  • We would like to thank the person who sent in the following information:

From a report in the Cambridge Independent Press on the 3 December 1887 the license for the Bull’s Head, Ashwell passed from James Bryant to James Pritchard so perhaps it is a ‘J’ inscribed on the measure and not an ‘A’
