Strickland, William

William was born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 23 August 1884, the fourth son of Charles and Annie (nee Stamford) Strickland.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Nothing is known of William’s military history except that he enlisted on 7 March 1917.

He survived the War.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census shows him a coal merchant in Ashwell.

William married Daisy Symonds in the parish church at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 31 July 1909. They had five children, all born in Ashwell, Edward Charles born 1910, Harold William born 1912, Galdys E born 1916, Priscilla Joan born 1922 and Douglas Victor born 1926.

The 1939 census shows the family living in Ashwell, with William a house painter.

William died at Ashwell in the first quarter 1950.

William’s brothers Eugene, Percy, Bertie and Victor all served in the War and survived.  His brother Oben died from wounds in the Battle of the German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line.

  • William was my Great grandfather, they were living in Breachwood Green in 1939, and William and Daisy had another daughter Maire in 1936. William moved to Breachwood Green to work for Captain Harrison on the Kings Walden Estate, my grandfather also worked for the Estate for a while as a painter and decorator. William is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard, Kings Walden. Daisy was born in Caxton, Cambridgeshire and died in 1991 age 100. My grandfather Harold served in the RAF during the Second World War with a Spitfire ground attack squadron of the 2nd Tactical Air Force that went to France and Belgium after D-Day, his brother Doug served in the Royal Navy
