Huffer, Lewis

Lewis was born on 2 December 1883 in Ashwell, Hertfordshire, the second son of John and Emily (nee Huffer) Huffer.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylor School in Ashwell.

Lewis enlisted with the army on 22 November 1917 in London.  He was an electrical wireman and on 5 December 1917 was sent to Woolwich to take a trade test.  On 8 December 1917 Lewis joined the Army Service Corps, Motor Transport Division and was sent to Grove Park for training.  Nothing else is known about his military history.  He survived the War

Lewis was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census shows him living in Battersea, London working as an electric wireman.

Lewis married May Chapman in Battersea, London in the 3rd quarter 1912.  They had no children.

The 1939 census shows them living in Battersea, London with Lewis an electrician.

Their respective wills leave their assets to Lewis’s brother Frank and his wife Lottie Ethel. Lewis died on 23 July 1963 at Whiteley House, Whiteley Village, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, the same village in which his brother Walter had lived.

Two of Lewis’s brothers, Walter and Charles, served in the War and both survived.  His brother Arthur emigrated to America in 1905.
