Strickland, Victor

Victor was the seventh son of Charles and Annie (nee Stamford) Strickland, born at Ashwell on 10 April 1890.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Nothing is known of Victor’s military history.

He survived the War.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census shows him a carpenter.

Victor married Ruth Letitia Gentle at Ashwell in the 1st quarter 1916.  They had two children, Vera Lily born on 11 February 1920 at Ashwell and Joan Mary born on 9 January 1922 also at Ashwell.

The 1939 census shows them living at Ashwell with Victor a house decorator.

Victor died at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage on 22 March 1955.

Victor’s brothers Eugene, Bertie Charles, William and Percy all served in the War and survived, but Oben died from wounds in the Battle of the German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line.
