Huffer, Walter

Walter was born on 22 July 1876, the eldest son of John and Emily (nee Huffer) Huffer in Ashwell, Hertfordshire.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Walter enlisted on 8 November 1917 with the Royal Flying Corps, Regimental Number 109264.  The Air Force Muster Rolls of 1918 list Walter as a telephonist, Tele Operator, an Air Mechanic 2 on entering and Private 1 in 1918.  Nothing else is known of his military history.  He survived the War.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Walter married Alice Green in Bethnal Green, London in the 3rd quarter of 1901.  They had three children, Alice Emily born 1902, Ethel Maud born 1905 and Walter Edward born 1908.

The 1911 census shows Walter as a ledger clerk for a gas and electric engineer in Battersea, London.

The 1939 census shows Walter and Alice living in Merton and Morden, Surrey with Walter the managing clerk of a metal works.

Walter died on 25 August 1954 Whiteley Village, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.

Two of Walter’s brothers, Lewis and Charles, served in the War and both survived.  His brother Arthur emigrated to America in 1905.
