Methodist Chapel, High Street
Interior of the Methodist Chapel

There is very little in this month’s newspaper reports although I am sure there were other happenings going on in Ashwell. Where are the Harvest Suppers and Literary Society Lectures? Perhaps things were just warming up after the summer.

An advertisement heralded the first dance of the season to be held at Ashwell Bury. At the Choral Society AGM Mrs Fordham was elected to the Chair and plans for the forthcoming season were announced. The Women’s Institute talk this month, at the Merchant Taylors School, was all about upholstery with special attention to making loose covers.

The football teams spent the month pitted against Pirton. In the Greg Cup, 1st round at home they could only draw 1-1 but in the replay they lost 2-0. In the Herts Junior Cup (2nd round) Ashwell beat Pirton Athletic 2-1. At home to Letchworth C.L.B, Ashwell lost 3-2.

In an interesting match the hockey ‘Odds & Ends’ played their first match at Odsey against Stotfold. The Odds & Ends was a mixed team of men and women.

Mr King Fordham, the actor, who died suddenly on stage at Weymouth, left an estate valued at £1,397.

The Wesleyan (or Methodist) Church had a grand re-opening after the renovation by Messrs Bailey & Co, the Ashwell building firm. A collection at the service raised £52-5s-7d for the renovation fund. The Chapel was built in 1880 on a prime spot on the High Street by Baileys. It replaced the chapel in Church Lane which had become too small. It closed in 1978 and was demolished the following year to be replaced by the three houses at 51, High Street.
