On the 7th December the new Ashwell Village Hall was opened by Lord Robert Cecil. Thanks were given to Mrs Fordham’s for her generosity in converting the ‘shell’ into a hall, a task which was masterminded by the architect, Mr Morley Horder. Lord Cecil gave a talk on the ‘League of Nations’ and then there was the Presentation of Red Cross War Service medals. This was followed by tea & refreshments which raised £30. In the evening there was entertainment by Mr Dan Hall and his concert party. Initially it was much used by the newly formed Men’s Club and a thriving Theatre Club. There were also Public Baths available.

December was a disappointing month on the football pitch. In the Herts Junior Cup Ashwell 1st lost 2-0 to Letchworth Town Reserves. In Division II they beat Ickleford Reserves, 4-0, but lost 1-0 to Norton Social. The Ashwell Res lost 2-0 to Letchworth Tabulator.
A Football Supper was held at Three Tuns but the events were marred by the death of someone who had been a great sportsman and driving force behind the Football Club. Mr George F. Pack died on 25th November in Royston infirmary after a long illness. He was 52 and the eldest son of the late Mr James Pack, the Ashwell blacksmith. Among his many qualities he was noted as a talented composer and musician in Australia and Ashwell, a sportsman and umpire, and also a newspaper correspondent. He seems to have been an interesting person that we need to know more about.

The sudden death occurred of Miss Wilderspin, who was nurse and companion to Mrs Goble of Cambridge Villas. One morning she was found dead in bed. Her stepmother identified body and at the inquest stated she was subject to fits. Dr Woodforde confirmed he had treated her for epilepsy and thought she must have had a fit and buried face in pillow.

Mrs Eliza Picking, the wife of Mr Herbert Picking, of the High Street died, aged 81, after a short illness. Continuing this theme a Memorial Cross was erected in the cemetery to the late Mr E King Fordham.

On a brighter note there was a children’s concert at the Wesleyan School room and the marriage took place of John Skerman on 16th December at Bushey Hill Park, son of the late Mr & Mrs John Skerman to Elizabeth Hannah Webb, daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Charles Webb of Ashwell.
