Foden Wagons

Foden Wagons in Fordhams Brewery
Fordhams Foden Dray, High Street Ashwell

When I saw that the Foden band were coming to the Music Festival this year (2010) it reminded me that we had a picture of two steam powered Foden wagons that were owned by Fordhams Brewery.  The picture was taken sometime before 1932 in what is now Fordham Close. I am sorry it is such a poor condition but it is only a copy. The second picture is taken in the High Street. In the background you can just see the Three Tuns and the old Wheelwrights Shop.

The Fodens must have been a great improvement over the old horse drawn drays to have had a special picture taken of them. However it was not long before they were superseded by a fleet of motor lorries.

  • My brother and I visited Ashwell yesterday and bought a newsletter in the church. How amazing to recognise this picture from ‘A Different World, Ashwell before 1939’ by Albert Sheldrick – the man standing between the two steam wagons is our grandfather Ernest Kingsley, who was the transport manager at the brewery at that time. My father also worked there later. We had a wonderful time walking round and this added to our happiness! Thank you! Sue Hall nee Kingsley ( Lincoln)
