Oyston, John

John was born on 1 July 1880 in Ashwell Hertfordshire, the only son of Arthur and Sarah Ann (nee Waldock) Oyston.  His father died in 1893 and his mother in 1894 and John went to live with his maternal grandmother .

John enlisted at London on 13 November 1915.  He served in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders with the 4th Bedfordshire Regiment, D Company, Regimental Number 26218, and by 19 October 1918 he had been promoted to SergeantJohn survived the war and returned to Ashwell where he died on 27 August 1932.

He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

John is buried in the St Mary’s Church burial ground and is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Before enlisting John was a stockman.

It is believed he did not marry or have children.

He died aged 42 on 27 August 1932 and is buried in the St Mary’s Church, Ashwell burial ground.
