Austin, Montague Stanley

Montague Austin was born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire in 3rd quarter 1893, the 3rd son of Charles William and Emma Rhoda (nee Wallis) Austin of Foresters Cottages, High Street, Ashwell.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School, Ashwell.

Montague was a Sergeant in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps 10th Battalion 59th Brigade 20th (Light) Division Service number R/10078. He died of wounds on 16 March 1917 aged 24 whilst in the line outside Guillemont, Somme, France.

He is commemorated at Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte, France plot IV.C.21, inscription on the Headstone: is “Peace perfect Peace EA” and on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour and the Ashwell War Memorial.

Montague was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

Before he enlisted Montague was a stable hand in domestic service
