Covington, Albert George

Albert was born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 3 December 1889, the 2nd son of George Goodchild Covington and Emily (nee Waldock) Covington. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Albert enlisted with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Regimental Number R/10077, in February 1915.  During the War he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, Regimental Number 14028, and was promoted to Sergeant.  He was in the 128th Company which saw active service in Mesopotamia, the Asian Theatre of War.  Albert survived the War.

He was awarded the British Medal and the Victory Medal.  He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census shows him as a grocer’s assistant.

Albert married Agnes Gertrude Walker in December 1928 at Chesterton, Cambridge.  It is not known if they had children.  Agnes died on 25 December 1950.  Albert then married Edith E Shepherd in the 3rd quarter of 1951.  It is not known if they had children.

Albert George was the licensee of ‘The Engine’ pub in Ashwell from 1937 to 1953.  The 1939 census shows him as a grocer’s manager and innkeeper, living at The Engine.

Albert died on 8 October 1967 at Ashwell.
