Hankin, Bernard George

Bernard was born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 18 May 1896, the only son of John and Rosina (nee Bryant) Hankin.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Bernard enlisted with the Royal Field Artillery Territorial Force on 1 November 1915, Regimental Number 895728.  He was then taken into the main force Royal Field Artillery and saw active service in Egypt.  He survived the War.

Bernard was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Before enlisting he was a clerk in the bottling department of a brewery.

Bernard married Grace Lilian Webb at Therfield, Hertfordshire on 2 July 1921.  They had three children, Bernard John born 1922, Ernest Arthur born 1925 and Peter David born 1935.

The 1939 census shows them living in Ashwell with Bernard a brewer’s labourer.

Bernard died in January 1963.
