Tyler, Howard Albert

Howard Albert was the son of Mark Tyler and Susan Charlotte Tyler born at Baldock, Hertfordshire on 19 December 1890.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Howard enlisted on 21 June 1917 with the Royal Garrison Artillery, Regimental Number 169540, 375th Siege Battery.  He served on the Western Front, France and Flanders where the Battery was engaged in battles around Ypres.  Howard survived the War.

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

From the age of 9 months Howard lived with his uncle Charles Howard and his wife in Ashwell.

The 1911 census shows them living at Ashwell End Farm, Ashwell, Hertfordshire and Howard as a farm labourer.

Howard married Gertrude Worboys in the 4th quarter 1914 at Ashwell, Hertfordshire.  They had nine children: Lydia Annie 1915, Leslie Sidney Howard 1916, Gwendoline Gertrude 1919, Derrick Horsley 1920, Charles James 1923, John Bevan 1925, twins Percy Howard and Patrick 1927, and Christine Mary 1930, all born at Ashwell.

Howard died at Ashwell in December 1938.
