Worboys, Sidney Walter

Sidney Walter was the fifth son of James and Charlotte (nee Huffer) Worboys born on 2 June 1893 at Ashwell, Hertfordshire.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylor School in Ashwell.

Sidney Walter Worboys (Regimental Number 890488) and his friend Herbert George Clements (Regimental Number 890489) enlisted together in September 1915 with the Royal Field Artillery, Territorial Force.  They saw active service with the East Anglian Division in Gallipoli and Palestine.  They both survived the War.

Sidney was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

The 1911 census shows Sidney as a farm labourer.

He married Florence Winifred Whitby (nee Stoten), a widow with two children, in 1930 in the Royston district.  Florence’s first husband, Andrew Whitby, was killed in action in the War.

The 1939 census shows them living at Ashwell with Sidney a horseman on a farm.

Sidney died in the Stevenage district in November 1984.

Sidney’s brothers, Ernest John and Leslie John also served in the War and both survived.
