Ashwell United Reformed Church Clock
Photo Club 2010
Taken from the Ashwell entry in the Post Office Directories:
1851 – Carter John, beer retailer & clock maker
1866 – Carter George, watch maker
The Church was destroyed in the 1850 fire of Ashwell. The clock displays Carter – Hitchin on the face; It would therefore seem likely that John Carter made the clock for the newly rebuilt church which re-opened in 1852.
John Carter is also mentioned in a document under the ‘Toleration Act’:
“House of Francis Gentle, Ashwell, certified for Wesleyan Methodists February 17th 1824 by Francis Gentle, Benjm. Gentle, John Carter, William Carter”.
