Brown, Percy MM

Percy was born in 1884 at Newnham, Hertfordshire to William and Naomi (nee Ingrey) Brown. From the census records it appears that Percy was the 17th child (7th son) born to William and Naomi!  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylor School in Ashwell.

Percy Brown enlisted in February 1908. The Signals Company was formed in 1908 so it is possible Percy joined at the inception. He saw active service on the Western Front as he passed through the No.4 Casualty Clearing Station in France after a severe case of influenza in 1918.  Percy survived the War.

Percy was awarded the Military Medal, a Level 3 Gallantry Medal, for ‘gallantry and devotion to duty under fire’. He was also awarded the 14-15 Star, the British Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour and the Newnham Church Roll of Honour.

It is not known if he married or had children nor is it known when he died.
