Armed Forces Veterans

This section of the website is about past members of Ashwell and surrounding villages and their association and involvement with the first World War, 1914 to 1918.

There are three sub-sections based on the sources of information used so far:

1. The names that appear on the War Memorial in Ashwell in the 1914-1918 section, with some historical data researched from the National Archives at Kew. Note that in some instances the family or residential link with Ashwell may be uncertain and will be updated when further information becomes available.

2. A set of some 100 photographs which were collected by Mr Morgan Biles, a past Headmaster of The Merchant Taylors’ School in Mill Street, Ashwell.

3. Photographs with some historical data that first appeared in The Herts. and Cambs. Reporter during and just after the First World War. Copies of the original booklets are held in the Ashwell Museum.

An addition that would make it all come alive would be the inclusion of the handed down stories that can only come from family members.

It is hoped that this section will not remain static but will grow as further research continues.
