Mark enlisted on 15th July 1916 with the Royal Garrison Artillery, Regimental Number 102536 and was a gunner with the 256th Brigade which was mobilised to the Western Front, France and Flanders on 8th February 1917.  He survived the War and died at St Marys Hospital, Eastbourne, Sussex on 2nd July 1954.

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Mark was the eldest son of Francis and Emily (nee Lucas) born at Pembroke Farm, Slip End, Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 18th July 1885 and baptised at Newnham, Hertfordshire.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. Before enlisting he was a groom. He moved to London before 1911 and was a coachman there.

Mark married Mary Anne Butcher in the 3rd quarter 1914.  It is not known if they had children. They settled in Polegate, Sussex and Mark died at St Marys Hospital, Eastbourne, Sussex on 2nd July 1954.
