Lewis enlisted with the army on 22nd November 1917, when he was living in London.  He trained with the 9th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, Regimental Number G/8586. He then transferred to the 16th Royal Sussex Regiment, Regimental Number 315394 and saw active service on the Western Front, France and Flanders.

Lewis was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Lewis survived the War and died on 23rd July 1963 at Whiteley House Whiteley Village, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Lewis was born on 2nd December 1883 in Ashwell, Hertfordshire, the second son of John and Emily (nee Huffer) Huffer.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylor School in Ashwell.

The 1911 census shows him living in Battersea, London working as an electric wireman.

Lewis married May Chapman in the Wandsworth District in 3rd quarter 1912.  It appears they had no children as their respective wills leave their assets to Lewis’s eldest and only surviving brother, Frank. Lewis died on 23rd July 1963 at Whiteley, House Whiteley Village, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, the same village in which his brother Walter had lived.

Two of Lewis’s brothers, Walter and Charles, served in the War and both survived.
