Herbert was a private with the King’s Own (Royal Lancashire) Regiment, 9th Battalion, regimental number 26534. He fought in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders. On 29th November 1917 he was sent to an ambulance train with suspected dysentery. Albert died in England on 5th September 1920.
He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
Herbert is buried in the United Reformed Church yard, north-east corner, and commemorated the Ashwell Village War Memorial, and St Mary’s Church Honours Roll.

Herbert was born in Ashwell c1880 eldest son of George and Emily (nee Waldock) Covington of Ashwell. George died in 1906, well before Herbert went to war.
Herbert was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. Before enlisting in the army Herbert was a domestic gardener.
