Charles enlisted on 3rd July 1918 with the Inns of Court, Officers’ Training Corps. He was discharged on 13th May 1919 as being no longer fit for military duty due to suffering from emphysema. He did not see active service.

Charles was awarded the Silver War Badge.

Charles died at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 22nd January 1948.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Charles was the eldest son of Richard Victor E and Martha (nee Hall) Westrope, born in Ashwell, Hertfordshire in the first quarter of 1895. Charles was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Charles helped his mother run the family store in Ashwell, Westrope’s grocers and drapers.

Charles married Gwenllian A Williams in the 4th quarter 1931.  They had three children, Richard C born 1932, John H born 1934 and Catherine born 1937.

Charles died at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 22nd January 1948.


Charles’s brother Thomas Frederick served in the War and survived.
