Nothing is known of William’s military history except that he enlisted on 7 March 1917.

He survived the War and died at Ashwell in the first quarter 1950.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

William was born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire in the 4th quarter 1884, the fourth son of Charles and Annie (nee Stamford) Strickland.  He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.  The 1911 census shows him a coal merchant in Ashwell, and the 1939 census shows him a painter, also in Ashwell.

William married Daisy Symonds in the parish church at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 31st July 1909. They had five children, all born in Ashwell, Edward Charles born 1910, Harold William born 1912, Galdys E born 1916, Priscilla Joan born 1922 and Douglas Victor born 1926.

William died at Ashwell in the first quarter 1950.

William's brothers Eugene, Percy, Bertie and Victor all served in the War and survived.  His brother Oben died from wounds in the Battle of the German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line.
