John was a Lance Corporal with the Dorsetshire Regiment, Regimental number 6743, and served at the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders. He was killed in action on 5th July 1915.
John was awarded the 1914/15 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
He is buried in Larch Wood (Railway Cutting) Cemetery, Ypres, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, grave II.J.16.

John was born in Ashwell the eldest son of Samuel and Rebecca (nee Huffer) Worboys. It is likely he was a pupil of the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell as the family was still in the village in 1891. The 1901 census shows them in Hornsey St Mary, Middlesex when John was 19 and a Road Navvy.
John married Lillian Sophia Atherfold on 10th November 1907 and they had two children, Lilian born in 1908 and Jack born in 1910. The 1911 census shows John as a police constable.
