1914 March
If you wanted a talk to while away the pre-TV evenings there were several on offer during March 1914. The ever popular Literary Society started the month with the subject of “Heredity” by a doctor. It was illustrated with lantern slides as was the lecture by the British and Foreign Bible Society about tombs and temples of Egypt. There was a report about six Ashwell friends who were seeking a greater thrill but their plans for a good night out wen...
The 'Scottish' Tapestry by Percy Sheldrick
One of the pleasures of being curator is dealing with unexpected offers of objects that fill out our knowledge of Ashwell’s history. Early in the year the museum was offered a tapestry designed and made by Percy Sheldrick. Mr Mervyn French, who now lives in Australia, was given it by the artist. However when he moved from Glasgow he left the tapestry behind to be displayed in his old church. After some years it was taken down but rescued from obl...
1914 February
Hockey and Hunting This column is turning into a results page for the successful Ashwell Hockey team. In February 1914they beat Emanuel College10-1 at home then went on to beat Letchworth 1-0 at their ground. They did lose to Clare College 7-4 but despite sleet and snow crushed Biggleswade 7-1. Other news under the sport banner concerned The Cambridgeshire Hounds who met at The Fox, which was a pub about half way to the station. There were nearly...
1914 January
The weather could not have been too bad in January 1914 as the hockey team played at least three fixtures beating Letchworth twice and then a mixed team won a return match with Messrs W H Smith & Son, Letchworth, by a margin of 11 -1. Hockey was definitely the most active winter sport as the football team went off to Dunton with just 9 men. However they only lost 2-1 which was thought to be a good effort. The other sporting event reported was a p...
1913 December
December seemed a very quiet month in 1913. Perhaps, as now, people are too busy getting ready for Christmas to have time to entertain themselves in other ways. Hockey and Hares The hockey team were very successful. They went to Biggleswade and won 5-2 then a mixed team of men and women played Smith and sons of Letchworth winning 7-0. Also under the heading of sport, although it would not be today, is a report of a meet of the Biggleswade Harrier...
Ashwell United Reformed Church Hall
After three years of careful planning, negotiating with the Conservation Officer and grant seeking the new window finally arrived! The original window was installed when the building was built in the late 1800s and may have been a reclaimed one at that time. When the old frame was removed it revealed that the brick arch had been built round the frame. It was agreed with the NHDC Conservation Officer, Mark Simmons, that as the old frame was so ru...
Hart/Christy Family Members
These photos were with John Jack Christy’s photos and documents given to the museum by his daughter Patricia in 2013. Patty Hart The photo of the lady has Patty Hart written on the back, it was taken at W Nichols, Cambridge and is believed to have been taken between 1855-1865. Careful research has not yet revealed where Patty fits into the Christy/Hart family tree. Unknown Man The photo of the gentleman does not have a name written on the back bu...
1913 November
There were the usual regular reports of Ashwell village life in the Royston Crow for November 1913. The ever popular Literary Society had two meetings. A talk by the well known local author Mr Reginald Hine on “The World of Dreams” accompanied with songs by his wife and on another night you could hear members ‘Holiday Reminiscences’. The Ashwell Snowdrop Minstrels were out and about this time entertaining the people of Hinxworth. The Hockey Club ...
