1913 April
I don’t know what happened to the sports clubs in April but there is only one mention of a match and it was probably very embarrassing. The Ashwell Hockey Club could only muster 8 men to play a Letchworth 11 and in bad weather they lost 6-1 Messrs Wilfrid Tott and Frank Westerman were given a Farewell send off at the Bulls Head. They were both leaving for Canada on an unassisted passage to seek their fortunes. They were well known local sportsmen...
1913 August
An event of national significance reported in the ‘Crow’ in August but actually occurring at the end of July was news of the 1913 Suffragist Pilgrimage. The National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies organised a mass march to London from seventeen cities across the country. The aim was to draw attention to the suffrage cause and particularly to the constitutional aims of the NUWSS. It was believed that the public, who were by now becoming accus...
1913 July
In July 1913 it seem that thoughts had already turned towards winter as there were at least two events raising money for the church’s new heating. The grounds at Odsey were opened for a Garden Fete and Bazaar. It made the enormous sum of £160. At the other end of the scale the Snowdrop Minstrels did two performances at County Schools and Mr H.P. Pack announced that ‘following the recent concert we will be able to donate £5 to the church heating f...

Individual Communion Cups - Ashwell United Reformed Church
Deacon’s Meeting – January 29th 1908 (First mention of individual communion cups) A discussion took place as to the advisability of adopting the system of individual communion cups. This also was referred to the Church Meeting. C C Edwards – Chairman Church Meeting – January 29th 1908 The subject of introducing the system of individual communion cups was brought forward. After some discussion the Pastor was asked to get particulars, prices ...
Ashwell URC Interior Refurbishment c1906/7
Around 1906/7 the interior of the church was refurbished in the Art Nouveau style. Sadly the minute books do not give exact details so the following has been put together from snippets of information gleaned from the minute books, from Bailey/Brays (Builders) books and informed guess work. According to the heart shaped brass inscription on the large chair the “The interior of this church was renovated in 1907. This Rostrum & furniture was g...
1913 June
On the 26th June the much anticipated Ashwell Garden Fete and Bazaar was held at the Bury. The Tennis Club were involved organising a grand tournament with large prizes. The Congregational Sunday School had their Anniversary and school treat. Two other happy events were the weddings of Priscilla Worboys with George Payne and Gertrude Christy with Frederick Ablett. There was a Benefit Smoking Concert at the Bushel & Strike for Benjamin Waldock. He...
Christy's Shop - early 1940's - late 1940's
Evidence of an Agreement between Mrs Louisa Christy of Parade House, High Street, Ashwell (widow) and a Mr F Bowes of Deanscroft Avenue, Kingsbury, London NW9 dated 23rd October 1940 has come to light. It would appear that Louisa sold a lease to Mr Bowes in the sum of £600 + stock-in-trade in the sum of £424.16.10d., for the shop and Parade House. It also appears that Mr Bowes ran the shop for 7 years prior to Anna and Kit who rented the shop an...
The Chestnut Tree at Carters Pond
The Chestnut Tree on Carters Pond Many of you will have noticed that the chestnut tree with the seat around it opposite the museum has been felled for safety reasons. So I thought it may be of interest to retell the story of its planting. In the museum we have a copy of a newspaper cutting with a picture from the Herts Pictorial published at the time. In 1931 the 1st Ashwell Guides ceremonially planted a red chestnut tree on the ground at the jun...
1913 May
Sport was back on the agenda in May 1913. In an advert the Tennis club invited entries for a tournament and on the 9th had their AGM at the Merchant Taylors School. The Ashwell Cricket Club had its first match of the season against the Cambridge Rabbits Two events were of special notice. A balloon descended at Windy Harbour, Odsey obviously unintentionally as the occupants, one of which was Lord Lambton, were severely shaken. A storm on the Tuesd...

1913 March
The events of March 1913 again show how the world has changed in 100 years. At an Occasional Court in Royston Mabel Pammeter (37), who came from Ashwell but was now an inmate of the Royston Union Workhouse, was charged with 12s 10d damage for breaking 23 panes of glass. She said she had been egged on by others and attacked another inmate. As a consequence of this she was put in a cell with her supper and used the mug to smash the windows. She pro...
1913 September
Football Club There must have been some sort of crisis in the Ashwell Football Club as a meeting was held at the Bushel & Strike to form a new team, for which there was much support. Mr George F. Pack convened the meeting and Mr W.A. Fordham was appointed President. It was agreed that the new club was ready to arrange fixtures. The true history of the club at this time is shrouded in a little mystery to me as we have, in the museum, pictures of t...

The Church Clock
From the churchwardens accounts for the year 1563 4d was paid for a lock to the clockhouse. This means there must have been a clock in the church by then. The Clockhouse contained all the workings of the clock and looked like a large wardrobe. It probably stood at the bottom of the tower as shown in the illustration. You can see the marks high on the wall where the ropes went up to the bells. This clock had no face; time was marked by the bells. ...
1913 February
The many Clubs and Societies were again very active this month. The Nursing and Coal Clubs held concerts in the County Council schoolrooms that raised £8.77. Although this seemed an innocent fund-raising event it incurred the wrath of Mr John Delver who wrote a letter protesting about a ‘smoking concert’ in the Public Schoolroom. Interestingly for such an early date he objected to the use of the room for smoking and also non-educational matter ca...

1913 January
The main event of the month, in column inches, happened not in Ashwell but in London where on the 4th inst. at Holy Trinity Church, Kensington Gore William Herbert Fordham of Mura-Szerdahely, Hungary, second son of Sir H. George Fordham of Odsey, married Eleanor, only child of Mrs H. Sibthorpe Barlow. The couple went off to live in Vienna. Later W H Fordham came back to Ashwell living in Odsey House until 1976. The paragraph gives us a glimpse of...
