Ashwell and Morden Station

Ashwell Station 1890's
Ashwell Station 2000

I commuted to Kings Cross, London every week day. At that time the station came under the jurisdiction of the London North Eastern Railway and had a station master and George the porter.

The platform was lower than the step off the train and George the porter had a little woode 2-step ladder which he would take to the open carriage doorways to cover the gap between the platform so travellers could alight.

The station was always wonderfully clean and tidy and the station garden full of flowers in the summer. There was a competition for the best kept garden among the neighbouring stations. I remember George telling me very proudly that they had won the prize one year.
