The Icknield Way

Icknield Way/Ashwell Street looking West from Station Road

The Icknield Way

The Icknield Way was one of the old thoroughfares of prehistoric times.  Deep, hollow traffic ruts now completely silted up can plainly be seen in air photographs.

Ashwell Street enters the district a mile south west of the village.  It is thought to have crossed Arbury hill, between the camp on the south and the modern road on the north.  It passes south of Ashwell along a little used track above the village and goes between the Ruddery Spring and the hill where a celebrated Romano-British Cemetery was found some years ago.
