The Bulls Head (Beams)

After it ceased to be a public house, the Bulls Head became private dwellings. The eastern end, which is now Beams, in 1920’s was the home of Ethel Dilley. Her Step-father had bought a load of fruit in Royston, but had forgotten that the next day was a Bank holiday. Ethel sold all of the fruit and made £10.00.

She went up to Petticoat Lane every Thursday with her stepfather, where he sold chickens.

She started her greengrocery and fruiterers shop at Beams in the 1930’s, selling her husbands produce.

In 1940 she sold the shop to Miss Ward, who then later sold it to Mrs James. In 1948 she was selling Wendy’s Ices and by 1954 Walls Ice creams, confectionery and started a library.

Not long after the shop closed.
