The Police House

The original police house on the corner of Hodwell, seen here on the extreme left. Photo taken in the 1920s.

There have been many policemen who have lived in this house, like PC Hart and PC Lazenby.  My father, PC Maynard, was the last village policemen to live in this house.

The house was built in the 1930s, with an extension consisting of a police office added to the left of the house in the 1950s.

Before this house was built there was another police house, now destroyed, which was opposite the United Reformed Church in the High Street.  People like James Thorne, constable in 1834, lived there.  There is a bench now where that house used to be.

The old village policeman got paid for attending riots, delivering notices to the public and, after the Education Act, making sure that every child in the parish went to school.

My dad was the village policeman from 1994 to 1999.  He was responsible for: Ashwell, Newnham and Caldecote, Hinxworth, Bygrave and Radwell.  He patrolled on an off road motor bike.  His hours were 8 hours minimum and he could do what he liked(!)

All in all I think this house is a very interesting house and I love living here.
