The Lychgate is where they used to put coffins as part of the burial service. 

The Ashwell lychgate was built about 600 years ago and it is one of the few double lychgates in the country.  

Before the eighteenth century most people were nor buried in coffins but simply wrapped in shrouds, so it could be that the gable ends were filled in so as to keep out the rain.
